Apple Swift Programming

I have had a chance to play with the new Apple Swift programming language for about a month now using the Xcode betas. In my opinion it is not ready for prime time yet; and will probably not be ready by the late September public release.  There are a LOT of features missing, not the least of which is exception handling and scope modifiers. 

Even chief architect Chris Lattner has admitted that there are missing features at SwiftInFlux.

Bottom-line:

I would not give up your knowledge of Objective-C yet. It may be deprecated soon, but it will be a deprecation not going away soon. 

The Life of Beethoven in a Day

Last Saturday, June 22, I had the unique experience of hearing pianist Stewart Goodyear play all 32 of the Beethoven piano sonatas in a single day. The performance was at the Berlind Theater, which is part of the McCarter Theater Center of Princeton University.  It was not just hearing approximately 9 hours of music, but seeing the life of Beethoven in its entirety.  Continue Reading »
